Why a Trampoline Is Essential for Gymnastics Training
Trampolines are one of the most effective training tools for gymnasts at every level. They develop air awareness — the ability to know where your body is in space during rotation — which is fundamental to learning flips, twists and dismounts safely. Regular trampoline training builds core strength, improves spatial orientation, and gives gymnasts the confidence to attempt new skills in a lower-risk environment than a hard floor.
Many Gymnastics Ireland clubs use trampolines as a core training tool, recognising that the repetition of aerial skills on a responsive surface accelerates skill development. For home use, a quality rectangular trampoline allows gymnasts to practise routines, warm up before competitions, and maintain conditioning year-round — especially valuable during Ireland's wet winters when outdoor training can be limited.
Rectangular vs Round: Which Shape for Gymnastics?
Professional and Olympic trampolines are rectangular. This isn't arbitrary — rectangular trampolines provide consistent bounce across the entire jumping surface, meaning a gymnast can take off and land at any point on the mat with predictable response. Round trampolines, by contrast, are designed to push jumpers toward the centre, which limits where you can train effectively.
For serious gymnasts, rectangular is the clear choice. The BERG Ultim range is entirely rectangular, available in sizes from 200cm to 500cm. This means gymnasts can practise tumbling passes, landing drills and aerial combinations with the same bounce consistency they'll experience on competition equipment.
That said, round FlatGround trampolines (like the BERG Champion or Elite FlatGround) are excellent for younger gymnasts and recreational use. They're flush with the ground, safe, and provide a great introduction to bouncing skills before transitioning to a rectangular surface.
What Size Trampoline for Gymnastics?
Size matters for gymnastics training. A larger surface gives you more room for tumbling passes and reduces the risk of landing near the edge. Here's our recommendation by age and level:
Ages 4–8 / Beginner
200–280cm rectangular — Ultim Favorit 280 is ideal.
Ages 8–14 / Intermediate
330–410cm rectangular — Ultim Champion 410 gives ample room for practising routines.
Ages 14+ / Advanced
500cm+ rectangular — Ultim Elite 500 or Pro Bouncer 500 for advanced tricks.
Competition Training
Pro Bouncer 5x5 (500×500cm square) — maximum surface area.
FlatGround vs Regular vs InGround for Gymnastics
| Feature | FlatGround | Regular | InGround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation | Requires excavation | On legs, no digging | Partial excavation |
| Height | Flush with ground | ~90cm above ground | ~20cm above ground |
| Safety net | Optional (often not needed) | Always included | Optional |
| AeroWall | ✅ Compatible | ❌ Not compatible | ❌ Not compatible |
| Relocatable | No | Yes | No |
| Best for gymnastics? | ⭐ Best choice | Good — easiest setup | Good — low profile |
FlatGround is the preferred choice for gymnastics because it sits level with the ground, allowing gymnasts to step on and off freely — essential for practising dismounts and tumbling passes from mat to trampoline. It's also the only type compatible with the AeroWall rebound training wall.
